The position is opened in the framework of the research project “The homeland: In the footprints of the early Indo-Europeans”, financed by the Carlsberg Foundation. The project seeks to determine when and where Proto-Indo-European – the ancestor of the Indo-European languages – was spoken, by combining the findings of historical-comparative linguistics with archaeological and genetic evidence. The principal investigator of the project is Associate Professor Thomas Olander, a comparative linguist. The project will also include a postdoctoral researcher specialised in the archaeological aspects of the problem. The position involves research in the Indo-European homeland problem in the broad sense, including theoretical and methodological problems as well as more specific problems related to lexicon and, if relevant, morphology and phonology. The PhD student will be part of the Roots of Europe Center, which includes a professor, an associate professor and four postdoctoral researchers.EligibilityIt is expected that the successful applicant will have a background in comparative Indo-European linguistics, including a profound knowledge of the oldest stages of the various Indo-European language branches. Applicants need to hold a two-year Master’s degree (120 ECTS) or the equivalent. They also must have attained a level of proficiency in English equivalent to that required on completion of Danish upper secondary education (upper secondary B-level or equivalent). Applicants who have already obtained a PhD degree will, as a main rule, be dismissed.ScholarshipAs a PhD scholar with a PhD scholarship you are employed on a short term employment contract of 36 months without the possibility of extension except in cases of illness or maternity/paternity leave. Employment as PhD scholar occurs pursuant to the applicable rules of the Faculty of Humanities, as well as the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).Under this agreement, the PhD student is obliged – without further remuneration – to carry out allotted work to an extent corresponding to a total of 840 working hours in the case of a three-year contract. As a PhD student holding a PhD scholarship you are employed as a member of scientific staff in accordance with the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).Your total salary consists of a basic pay rate based on previous academic job experience and a supplement. The basic monthly pay rate for a PhD student is currently (as of April 1, 2013) DKK 24,080 and the PhD supplement is DKK 1257.83 monthly. DKK 3500 montly is paid to a pension scheme.
