Minister urges solidarity in fight against gender-based violence

first_img Sharing is caring! Minister of Social Services, Community Development and Gender Affairs, Gloria Shillingford has called on all citizens to stand in solidarity for an end to all forms of gender based violence.Minister Shillingford said in an address to mark the launch of 16 days of activism campaign against gender violence on Tuesday 25 November 2014, this is essential because a national registry has revealed that over seven hundred cases of domestic cases have been reported here since 2011.The 16 days of activism campaign, an initiative of the United Nations, is being observed under the theme “Challenging Stigma and Discrimination; Let’s End Violence in Dominica.” Gender based violence is any act or conduct, based on gender, which causes death or physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women (and men and boys) whether in the public or the private spheres.Minister Shillingford said gender violence represents a violation of human rights, a serious health problem and an obstacle to socio-economic development which cuts across class, income, age and cultural divides, impinging on and compromising the fundamental rights and freedoms of the victims. The Minister noted that gender–based violence comes with high social and economic costs to the individual, family, workplace and society.“A National Registry for Domestic Violence, which was established in July 2011, has since housed statistics of 717 reported cases of domestic violence”. “Of these 620 (86.5%) were women while 86 (12%) were men. In additional, the National Registry also has a recording of 468 cases of child victims (65.3% of the total number of cases) comprising 403 girls and 60 boys,” Mrs Shillingford said. The Minister added that these statistics “are most alarming” for a small population like Dominica and “unreservedly, add my voice to the urgent call for an immediate end to all forms of violence against men, women, boys and girls in Dominica and the wider world”.Minister Shillingford called on all citizens to participate in activities planned by the Bureau of Gender Affairs with its partners – the Social Welfare Division, the Dominica National Council of Women, the Dominica Planned Parenthood Association, Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities, and CARIMAN.Among these are a number of radio programs on various related topics, a church service for the elderly on December 2 and a debate by students from the Dominica State College on December 10. 256 Views   no discussions Share Sharecenter_img Tweet Share LocalNews Minister urges solidarity in fight against gender-based violence by: Dominica Vibes News – November 26, 2014last_img read more

Brighton reject offer from Russia for midfielder, case getting interesting

first_imgBefore we start writing another big story about Alexis Mac Allister, we better recall what has happened in the past few moths. Brighton signed the player on a €8m deal in January. Since he couldn’t get a work permit, the Seagulls left him at his club Argentinos Juniors for six more months. The loan spell has now come to an end, and Mac Allister still can’t get work permit. In fact, his father has admitted that the process to get a EU passport hasn’t even started, and could take a year. That’s why several clubs started pursuing him, including Boca Juniors, Racing, Independiente and Estudiantes. And yesterday, it was reported the La Bombonera had agreed to have him for one year.Embed from Getty ImagesNow Argentine newspaper Olé comes up with a few more details of what has been happening. They say that despite the ‘yes’, Brighton and Boca Juniors will discuss this weekend how much of his salary each club will pay, and also if there will be a buying option in the contract.Olé also reports that Russian side Spartak Moscow have made a ‘multimillionaire offer’ to land the player. It’s not claimed if it was for a loan or a permanent deal, but either way, Brighton chose to keep the midfielder in Argentina, ‘prioritising’ the sporting factor.by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksTrending TodayForge of Empires – Free Online GameIf You Like to Play, this City-Building Game is a Must-Have.
