EU funds Napoli – Bari upgrade

first_imgITALY: The European Commission has approved the allocation of €124m from the European Regional Development Fund to support upgrading of 16·5 km of the Napoli – Bari route between Cancello and Frasso Telesino. This includes double-tracking to provide an increase in speed and capacity, the construction of stations at Valle Maddaloni and Frasso Telesino/Dugenta and the provision of a connection to enable freight trains to be directly routed to the Maddaloni Marcianise yard without impacting other services.‘This EU project will give a boost to local economies in Napoli, Caserta, Benevento, Foggia and Bari, with shorter travel time for inhabitants and tourists’, said Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc on October 8. ‘In the long run, this railway line, and the many others built with EU funding in southern Italy, will contribute to better quality of air in the region.’last_img read more

Cancer care advocate to receive Independence award

first_img Share Share 15 Views   no discussions Share LocalNews Cancer care advocate to receive Independence award by: – October 17, 2013center_img Sharing is caring! Tweet Vinna RoyerAn advocate for cancer care will receive Dominica’s third highest award of honour during the National Independence Rally on November 3.Former St Joseph school teacher and former president of the Dominica Cancer Society, Vinna Royer will receive the award for her contribution towards cancer care and awareness on the island. This was announced by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit at an award ceremony for twenty-five (25) St Joseph residents, including Mrs Royer, on Thursday, 17th October.Mrs Royer, who is one of the founding members of the Dominica Cancer Society and a cancer survivor has been advocating for better treatment facilities and funding for cancer patients. She has also been instrumental in educating the public and raising awareness about cancers which affect both men and women.“I am really surprised but excited,” Mrs Royer told Dominica Vibes after the announcement. She said this recognition is not only for her, but for the people whom she serves as well as those she works with. The Society has also been advocating for the establishment of a cancer treatment centre here which would reduce in the cost incurred by cancer patients for treatment overseas.“I pray that at some point in time there will be no cancer patients to work with, [but] as long as there remains persons to be served, I want to make myself available to serve”. “I don’t think it is only a matter for serving the Cancer Society, I think it has to do with community service as a whole,” she continued.Mrs Royer has also been very active within her community through service on the village council as well as in her church. She believes the award she will receive indicates government’s recognition for cancer care in Dominica.“I consider it a plus because it says that government is recognizing, people are listening, people are taking note. As long as people are taking note, we can expect to get better service”.Prime Minister Skerrit further announced that his government will assist seven Dominican cancer patients to travel abroad for treatment as per a request made by the Cancer Society.Mr Skerrit said the funding for that purpose was approved on Thursday. The names of the other awardees have not yet been disclosed.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img read more

Alaska’s “Walk For Apraxia” Going Virtual In September

first_imgThe funds raised through the Alaska Walk for Apraxia benefit Apraxia Kids, the leading nonprofit that works to strengthen the support systems in the lives of children with childhood apraxia of speech. This organization educates both families and speech-language professionals, endorses evidence based research, and spreads awareness about this disorder so that children can reach their highest communication potential through accurate diagnosis and appropriate, timely treatment. Information on how to attend the 2020 Alaska Walk for Apraxia can be found online. FacebookTwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享Apraxia Kids will host the 2020 Alaska Virtual Walk for Apraxia to continue the efforts of supporting children, families, and professionals affected by childhood apraxia of speech. Registered participants will have the opportunity to view the privately released virtual ceremony on September 5 and are encouraged to spread awareness by walking in their own local areas. All Walk for Apraxia events in North America were changed to a virtual experience to ensure the health and safety of all participants.center_img Childhood apraxia of speech is a motor speech disorder that makes it difficult for children to speak. Children with this diagnosis generally have a good understanding of language and know what they want to say, but have difficulty learning or carrying out the complex sequenced movements that are necessary for intelligible speech. There is no cure and treatment often requires many years of intense speech therapy. Sarah White, Chair of the Board for Apraxia Kids discusses how their organization has had to adapt during the COVID-19 emergency: “Our 45 online support groups on Facebook are active and providing parents with a safe and supportive outlet for asking questions, sharing frustrations, and offering hope. We continue to share resources across social media, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Articles, downloads, and webinars are available to help parents and children work towards speech goals while staying at home. We are developing new content as quickly as we can while continuing to ensure that the information we share is evidence-based and accurate. Our staff is working harder than ever to support you from the safety of their homes.”last_img read more

Dunbeholden brace for Mt Pleasant assault

first_imgIf the form and/or stance of both camps prove true, Royal Lakes could be buzzing with excitement today when Dunbeholden FC and Mount Pleasant do battle in one of five games on in the final set of games in the third round. This game pits the fourth-place Mount Pleasant on 16 points against the eighth-place Dunbeholden, who sit on 11 points. Points and position do not matter especially to Dunbeholden’s President Donovan Witter, who believes that, not only does his team have the ammunition to get the job done, but that they have only been outplayed in one match. “The reality is that we approach each game with one objective, which is to try and gain three points, and tomorrow’s (today’s) game will be no less so,” Witter said. “We have analysed all the games that we have played so far and, apart from the first game where we lost 1-3 to Cavalier, we have not been out played by any team,” Witter declared boldly. There is only one issue of concern for Dunbeholden heading into this big matchup. “The major challenge that we will have is that our captain and senior defender Shaquille Dyer will be out on cards. Apart from that, we are physically and mentally ready.” With Dyer out, Andre Dyce should anchor the backline with Nickoy Christian orchestrating the midfield. Dean-Andre Thomas should get good support from Andrae McFarlane and Rodave Murray who is recovering from his injuries. IMPROVED GOALSCORING Mount Pleasant’s Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis credits goalscoring for his team’s transformation. “We are scoring goals. The chances that we are getting, we are now scoring. That is the major difference. It is nothing fancy, we are doing the simple things. Putting away chances is important,” said Davis, who took over from Dovovan Duckie early in the season. Mount Pleasant had their best result with a 3-1 win over leaders Waterhouse and have not looked back since. One of the bright sparks for them is former national youth representative Jourdaine Fletcher, who has returned to form. “All the players have started to believe, and as far as Fletcher is concerned, this guy wants to play, he is enjoying himself and we hope that he can continue to the end of the season. “He was out in the cold and he has his eyes on the national team, and if he can keep his eyes there, then he will remain focused and we will continue to get good performances from him,” Davis said. Others such as Daniel Green, Cardel Benbow and Ronaldo Rodney will be important if they are to get a victory. Defending champions Portmore United will host leaders Waterhouse in the rematch of last season’s final. Based on form, Waterhouse are expected to exact revenge, while Humble Lion should be favoured to get the better of struggling UWI when both teams meet at Effortville. Second-place Molynes United have been on a four-game winless run and will be happy to see 10th-place Tivoli Gardens, while bottom-of-the-table Vere United will be hoping home advantage will do the trick against the visiting Cavalier. Today’s Games – 3 p.m. Dunbeholden FC vs Mount Pleasant FA @ Royal Lakes – 3 p.m. Humble Lion FC vs UWI FC @ Effortville Community Centre – 3 p.m. Portmore United FC vs Waterhouse FC @ Prison Oval – 3 p.m. Tivoli Gardens FC vs Molynes United FC @ Edward Seaga Complex – 3 p.m. Vere United FC vs Cavalier FC @ Wembley Centre of Excellence Tomorrow’s game – 8 p.m. Harbour View FC vs Arnett Gardens FC @ Harbour View Stadiumlast_img read more

Whether it be vintage white, lace up sweaters in the NHL, the gray-crowned hats of the 1990s in MLB, the teal invasion of the 1990s, BFBS in the 2000s, the retro movement of the 2010s, or other trends that group together identites instead of separating them, we can talk about them at will for hours. After all, isn’t the point of a uniform or logo to be able to identify one team from the other? This is the thread to celebrate how your favorite team is unique from the rest of the league (NHL, NFL, MLB, NBA, Division 1, Division 2, MLS, etc.). Still, as we are sure to see in this thread, your teams uniqueness might not exactly mean it’s a good idea.Rules:1) Any sport or league is fine.2) Only include primary logos, alternate logos, and jerseys. Anniversary logos, stadium logos, and other miscellaneous things don’t count.3) It might be an identity trait that no other team in that league shares. Mistakes are fine and everyone is welcome to point them out when they happen, but that’s the general rule for this thread.4) Present and past uniqueness is welcome. However, keep present examples lined up in the same era. For example, the Baltimore Orioles are the only team wearing a white front-paneled cap from 2012 – Present. Obviously there have been white-paneled caps in the past, but for now, the Orioles are the only one. For past examples, keep in mind that the present counts with it. If something unique happened in the past but that characteristic is here in the present, you should not use that as an example. Theres the present, active characteristic, then there is the past.5) Finally, you can include any characteristic, but please try not to include incredibly obvious example like “The Eagles are the only team in the NFL to have an eagle as a logo”. Try to give it a little bit more effort than that.My Examples:Baltimore Orioles:Past: Team with the longest tenured run of not depicting a letter on their primary cap logo. (1964 – 2011)Present: Only team wearing a white front-paneled cap. (2012 – Present)Boston Red Sox:Past: Only team to have a certain color predominately appear on a home jersey, but be completely gone on a road jersey. (Red from 1979 – 1989)Present: Longest tenured active home script depicting the team name. I understand this is a little controversial, but I don’t consider the small tweak made in the 1970s to be enough to make the earlier version a different script from the present-day, modern version.(1933 – Present)Chicago White Sox:Past: Only team to ever weart shorts in a major league game (1976)Present: Only team to not sport a color other than black, white, and the tones in-between. (1991 – Present)Cleveland Indians:Present: Only team to sport a cursive script at home and a block script (That’s block, not a script with serifs on it) on the road. (2011 – Present)Detroit Tigers:Past: Only team to have a certain color predominately appear on a road jersey, but be completely gone on a home jersey. (Orange from 1972 – Present)Present: Longest tenured home chest script in MLB. (1934 – Present)Houston Astros:Past: Only team to depict a sports venue in their primary or alternate logos. (1965 – 1994)Present: Only team to have block scripts (no serifs) on both the home and road jerseys. (2013 – Present)Kansas City Royals:Past: Only team to wear a colored alternate uniform with a base color that does not appear in the hat at all. (Black, 2006)Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim:Past: Longest tenure of depicting a state in their primary or alternate logos. (California, 1970 – 1992)Present: Only team where a logo appears on an entire uniform four or more times (2012 – Present)Minnesota Twins:Present: Only team with a logo depicting an actual baseball player. (2002 – Present)New York Yankees:Oldest active cap in MLB. (1913 – Present)Longest tenured active road script in MLB. (1973 – Present)Only team to have a primary color appear in their logo, but not appear anywhere on their jerseys. (1947 – Present)New York Mets:Present: Only team to sport a cursive script at home and a serifed script on the road.Miami Marlins:Past: Only team to have a completely teal cap.Present: Only team to have 5 or more colors on a wordmark.Colorado Rockies:Past: Most alternate uniforms for one year (4 in 2005)Oakland Athletics:Present: Only team in MLB to primarily sport the color green in their logos and jerseys.Atlanta Braves: Past & Present: Only team to not have some form of baseball equipment in any of their logos (alternate and primary). There’s plenty of examples in every sport. Have fun. Be sure to point out any mistakes I’ve made. Pictures are encouraged if you want. Utah Jazz notebook: Gregg Popovich learned film habits from Jerry Sloan

first_imgI don’t study much, I learned that from Jerry Sloan. – San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg PopovichSAN ANTONIO — When asked Tuesday if he’s seen improvement from Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he didn’t know because he doesn’t watch much film, something he learned from former Jazz coach Jerry Sloan.“I don’t study much, I learned that from Jerry Sloan,” he said. “I asked him one time, ‘How much film do you watch?’ and he said, ‘None.’ I said ‘What do you mean?’ and he said, ‘That’s what my assistants do.’ I took that philosophy from that day on. You’re much better worrying about what you do (than the opponent).”Later, when asked if he’d read a certain article about a basketball player, Popovich replied, “You think I read much of that stuff? I read nothing about sports — it’s boring.”JAZZ NOTES: The Jazz returned home after the game and will play Dallas Wednesday night at Vivint Arena. The 0-3 Mavericks were one of seven winless teams going into Tuesday night games. … The Jazz and Spurs will meet again Friday night in Salt Lake. … George Hill, who played three years for the Spurs at the start of his NBA career, got a loud ovation from the crowd when he was introduced as a Utah starter. Also, ex-Spur Boris Diaw got a big cheer when he was shown on the big screen, wearing a natty red suit (Diaw sat out game because of leg contusion) … The Jazz will celebrate Veterans Day on and off the court through the NBA’s “Hoops for Troops” Week. On Thursday, the Jazz will host a “Commitment to Service” project and on Friday, the team will host “Military Appreciation Night” during the Jazz-Spurs game at Vivint Arena.last_img read more
